Karol & Janek

Janek is adopted. His biological mother was drinking alcohol during pregnancy. The boy didn’t get any Apgar scores which means he was born dead. After five minutes he got two scores (probably weak respiration and pulse). On his life path Janek met Karol whose one year leave was devoted to all the necessary medical appointments, examinations, medical boards, formal requests and everyday kangaroo care. This huge man appeared to be full of love which made him a fully-fledged dad of the thin but curious “Set of Miseries”. Janek shares all his dad’s passions – including the railway one.

Kacper & Grzegorz

Another page from our calendar: Kacper cannot sleep without a talk with his dad-Grzegorz. It is really difficult as Grzegorz works abroad and what is more Kacper is not able to speak. He suffers from cerebral palsy being a six-year-old whose body is a chamber of pain. The boy is intellectually healthy. He needs rehabilitation, expensive medical treatment and soon he will also need costly equipment to communicate. Grzegorz works abroad because “here” he would not be able to earn enough money. Paradoxically, he leaves the family for the good of them. We had an occasion to see how would their everyday “talks” look like but for the distance which separates them.DSC_1477

Adaś & Tomek

Here is the next part of The “Józef” Fundation’s project. Adaś is a seven month old boy whose life depends on a respirator. In his third day of life he was diagnosed with spiral muscular atrophy (SMA). It is a death sentence for a child. The boy’s father, Tomek, does not give up. He decided to move heaven and earth to get his son out of the irreversible. He crossed the ocean when he heard about experimental treatment for Adaś. Every 45 days the boy is given an injection. Thanks to that he is able to move his head and hand or suck on a dummy, which was impossible before. Now it is Tomek’s biggest dream to see Adaś breathing without the respirator’s help. Adaś is the only child in Poland who started this treatment. At the same time he is huge hope for other children suffering from SMA.
